Le Bacon Est Très Bon
Cell phone minutes are insanely priced here in France, especially after coming from the US where prices are so inexpensive. After arming themselves with cell phones, the HEC exchange students quickly adopted the free text messaging service in lieu of calling.
Saturday morning, we received a text message indicating another classmate would be joining us on our trip to western France. After viewing the clown car we initially booked, we decided to upgrade to a slightly roomier Peugeot wagon. In an effort to save valuable minutes, we decided to attempt a text response - nothing too advanced, a simple GOOD would do. We got the "G" and then an "O" but the second "O" suddenly sent us into another menu.
Okay, it's a French phone, so clearly it speaks French. We will simply type "Bon." I enter the "B" and suddenly the message becomes BACON. Paul accidently hits send. He attempts a follow up message YES and gets YA. This indicates to our friends we are a) alive despite the hours long journey to the car rental or b) cleary enjoying a delicious pork breakfast while they sat in the campus dining hall waiting for us to pick them up. Fortunately, they were smart enough to realize this was a) confirmation.
Bacon is good and this country does love its pork - everything comes with jambon - but we had no idea the two words could be interchangeable.
